Artificial intelligence integration in higher education has emerged as a transformative force reshaping teaching, learning, and assessment practices across global academic institutions. This study examines the relationship between artificial intelligence integration and academic achievement, with a specific focus on the mediating role of student engagement. The increasing adoption of intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive learning platforms, learning analytics, and generative AI tools has significantly altered how students interact with academic content and instructors. However, the effectiveness of artificial intelligence in improving academic outcomes largely depends on the extent to which students are actively engaged in the learning process.
This research aims to investigate whether student engagement serves as a significant mediating variable between artificial intelligence integration and academic achievement in higher education settings. Drawing on constructivist learning theory and the technology acceptance model, the study conceptualizes artificial intelligence integration as a multidimensional construct that enhances cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement among students. Enhanced engagement is expected to lead to improved academic performance through increased motivation, personalized learning experiences, and timely feedback mechanisms enabled by AI-driven educational tools.
The study proposes a conceptual framework in which artificial intelligence integration directly influences academic achievement and indirectly influences it through student engagement. A quantitative research design is recommended, utilizing structural equation modeling through SmartPLS to assess direct and indirect relationships among variables.
Findings from existing literature suggest that artificial intelligence positively impacts student engagement by facilitating interactive learning environments, adaptive content delivery, and real-time academic support. Furthermore, student engagement has been consistently identified as a strong predictor of academic success. The mediating role of engagement is therefore critical in explaining how and why artificial intelligence improves educational outcomes.
The study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on educational technology by offering a comprehensive model that integrates artificial intelligence, student engagement, and academic achievement within higher education contexts.
